Il Colle Del Gusto Found tucked in the corner of a farmers’ market in Rieti, just outside of Rome, is Il Colle Del Gusto. A passion project between Antonio della Corte, who sourced sweet fillings for ice cream parlors and pastry shops, and Anna Maria Conti, a farmer and proprietor of a bed and breakfast a few miles north of Rome. The two combined Anna Marie’s own extra virgin olive oil with nuts grown on friends’ farms resulting in extraordinary spreads. The extra virgin olive oil lends the spreads a glossy sheen and unbelievably smooth texture. Each spread has a warm aroma of roasted nuts, and an intense flavor of which is decadent and delightfully lingering. Stop in for samples this weekend, 1/22-1/23.

Wine of the Week
Palacios Petalos Bierzo ’19
“Even though the 2020 is already hitting the shelves, I also tasted the 2019 Pétalos, a very balanced vintage that shows moderate alcohol and great balance. It is very approachable right now, open aromatically, and despite what the parameters might read, the wine comes through as fresher than the 2020. This is a wine produced with around 80% purchased grapes and 20% grapes from their own vineyards. There are notes of berries but also plenty of herbs; it’s aromatic, complex and with very fine tannins. It’s a classical continental vintage from Bierzo.”

Wine Collectors’ Corner
Guigal Ermitage Ex Voto ’07
“A similar extroverted, sexy style to the ’09, just on a slightly smaller scale, the 2007 Hermitage Ex Voto offers sensational black raspberry, creme de cassis, creamy licorice and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors, with the telltale minerality/graphite of the Hermitage Hill coming through with time in the glass. While aged close to four years in 100% new French oak, you’d never know it by tasting it. This full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered and already approachable beauty will have another 30+ years of drinkability. Drink 2015-2045.”
